American wind turbine maker GE Energy began construction of Vietnam’s first manufacturing plant producing components for wind-turbine generators in the northern seaport city of Hai Phong on Tuesday.
The US$61 million factory at the Hai Phong-Nomura Industrial Park is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2010, Vietnam News Agency reported.
The plant is expected to produce 10,000 tons of components a year, which will be exported to GE Energy’s manufacturing and service facilities around the globe.
The Hai Phong facility will provide installation, maintenance and repair services for the components it produces.
At Tuesday’s ground-breaking ceremony, a GE spokesperson said the company would recruit around 500 local people to work at the factory.
GE Energy is a subsidiary of global infrastructure, finance and media company General Electric Co., which employs more than 300,000 people worldwide.
Since 1960, GE Energy has provided technological support for a number of power generation projects in Vietnam.
Under a draft national power development strategy being considered by the government, renewable energy would increase to 5 per cent of total national energy output by 2020, with wind and solar power accounting for half of the renewable energy, Vietnam News Agency reported in April.
According to a survey, 8.6 per cent of Vietnam’s total area is suitable for wind-power generation.
