British opera to hit Hanoi stage
Tuoi Tre

Local and British artists will team up to introduce “The Little Sweep,” an opera for children by British composer Benjamin Britten to Hanoian audiences on February 3 and 4.

The two free shows are part of a series of arts projects by the British Council to introduce British music to Vietnamese audiences.

The Little Sweep” will be performed by artists from the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theater under the baton of British conductor Graham Sutcliffe at the Hanoi Opera House.

The 60-minute play will be presented in Vietnamese with English subtitles.

Born in 1913, Britten emerged as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He was the founder of the English Opera Group in 1947 and the Aldeburgh Festival the following year.

The Little Sweep” was written by Britten in 1949. It is often compared to the classic masterpiece “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens, the most popular British novelist of the Victorian era.

The opera tells the story of an eight-year-old sweep boy named Sam, who is sold into service and bullied by his elders.

When Sam comes to work for a rich family in Iken Hall, the children of this family take pity on the poor boy and decide to rescue him from the other sweeps.

It has been performing around the world and won fans among young theater-goers.

Free tickets are available at the British Council, at 20 Thuy Khue Street and the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theater, at 11 Nui Truc Street, Hanoi.
