Japanese dancer to play HCMC stage
Compiled by Hong Nguyen

Renowned Japanese contemporary dancer and choreographer Kaiji Moriyama will stage his first ever solo performance in Ho Chi Minh City on December 3.

The “Past to Future - Kaiji Moriyama Solo Dance” is one of a series of activities marking the Mekong – Japan Exchange Year 2009 between Japan and five Mekong River countries, including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

It will take place at 8p.m. at the city’s Opera House, at 7, Lam Son Square, District 1, The Saigon Times Daily reported.

The free show will begin with a collaborative work between the artist and the HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO). Moriyama will perform impromptu dances in harmony with the accompaniment of local Vietnamese musicians.

It will be followed by the well-known solo piece “Kurui” composed and performed by Moriyama himself.

Inspired from the Japanese Noh theater piece “Tenko” (Paradise Drum), the contemporary dance work is the collaboration between the dancer’s movements and the sounds of the drum.

The piece was praised by critics when it was showcased in Paris, Rome and Tokyo.

Free tickets are available at HSBO’s office, at 3, Phan Van Dat Street, District 1 or via the telephone number 3823 7419 or email: info@hbso.org.vn.

Born in 1973, Moriyama has won critical acclaim as one of Japan’s foremost contemporary dancers for his innovative performances inspired from Noh.

The artist has toured major performance halls in the region, including Tokyo, Australia, Hong Kong, Taipei and Seoul.
