The US is seeking to set up a trans-Pacific economic partnership involving Vietnam and six other nations, its ambassador in Hanoi, Michael Michalak, said at a meeting held Wednesday to mark the 15th year of the establishment of bilateral ties.
The US would continue to support Vietnam’s efforts to reform its administrative system, improve its investment environment, and speed up integration.
Talks on the alliance are expected to start in March, according to the Vietnamese government website.
Besides Vietnam and the US, the other six members of the proposed trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement are Australia, Peru, Singapore, New Zealand, Brunei, and Chile.
Vietnam and the US are also in talks for a Bilateral Investment Treaty for reciprocal protection of investments by both nations’ companies.
In 2009 the US overtook usual Asian suspects Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan to become the biggest foreign investor in Vietnam with US$9.8 billion, or almost half of all foreign investment.
Last year also saw almost 13,000 Vietnamese studying in the US compared to 8,800 in 2008.
The US hopes to set up an education consultancy center and open a university in Vietnam to strengthen bilateral ties in the field, Michalak said.
