Google map gets Vietnam-China border wrong
Minh Quang, Xuan Long

Google has released a world map with the Vietnam – China border a few kilometers south of its actual position as agreed by the two countries.

This is the second such instance after National Geographic Society recently published a map showing the disputed Paracel islands as part of China.

But an official from Vietnam’s Department of Survey and Mapping said the map at http://maps.google.com does not reflect any dispute over the border but is merely an error.

In the Google map, the border runs through Lao Cai town, showing half of Lao Cai Province as being in China.

It also relocates Ban Gioc waterfall to Chinese territory.

Border gates like Thanh Thuy in Ha Giang Province, Ta Lung and Tra Linh in Cao Bang Province , and Tan Thanh in Lang Son are shown as being many kilometers inside Vietnamese territory rather than on the border.

Do Viet Thi, deputy director of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s border line center, said though the map is mainly for reference and has no legal value, it should be more respectful while indicating countries’ sovereignty.

Earlier this week National Geographic Society admitted putting “China” beside the disputed Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago makes it ambiguous and promised to consider removing it.
