The Dong Nai People’s Court handed jail sentences to five government officials Monday for abetting a tax scam by a foreign company based in the southern province.
It found them guilty of illegally granting tax exemptions worth more than VND32 billion (US$1.73 million) between 2003 and 2005 to the Taiwanese Grobest & I-Mei Industrial Company based in Bien Hoa II Industrial Zone.
Phan Van Hien and Vu Xuan Hien, former deputy chiefs of the Ministry of Finance’s External Finance Department, got five years.
Hoang Ngoc Nang Hong, former head of the department’s Foreign Investment Division, got four years.
Pham Van Ngo and Dang Thi Bach Tuyet of the Dong Nai taxation department received suspended sentences of three years and one and a half years.
Another official from the taxation department was let off with a warning.
In 2004 police discovered that the three officials from the taxation department had instructed the company to evade income tax by seeking tax incentives.
It was told to sign a contract with an auditing company which obtained the papers waiving tax from the three finance ministry officials.
But the prosecution was unable to discover the officials’ motive in abetting the company.
Grobest is a frozen seafood processor and manufacturer of fish feed.
