A savage tiger attack on Thursday, which left one man dead and another seriously injured, may have been the result of unsafe retention cages used at the theme park in the southern province of Binh Duong.
The five-year-old Indochinese tiger, weighing 180kg, jumped over a 2.5-metre electric fence to attack three workers while they were planting trees in one of the enclosures, said Duong Thanh Phi, manager of the private park.
Investigators have said the big cats are housed in unsafe cages.
The park’s tigers are separated from visitors by an 8m-wide canal and a 2m-tall glass wall. Each enclosure is separated from another by a 2.5m-tall electric fence.
Unfortunately for the attacked workers, those numbers fall well short of the mark.
According to conservation NGO World Wildlife Organization, an adult tiger can leap up to 10 meters horizontally and four meters vertically.
Nguyen Cong Danh, 47, died at the scene after suffering serious head and neck injuries. Nguyen Thanh Giau, 21, is in a serious condition after sustaining head injuries. A third worker managed to escape by jumping into a nearby lake.
Tran Van Nguyen, vice head of the Binh Duong Forest Management Department, said the tiger was disturbed by the crane the workers were using to move trees into the enclosure.
Nguyen said authorities have yet to introduce regulations on enclosures for animals kept at zoos.
The 450-hectare Dai Nam Tourist World, which opened in 2007 about 40 kilometers northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, was authorized to keep 16 tigers, including a pair of white tigers.
Authorities have instructed the park to temporarily close animal displays until the cages and enclosure are modified.
