Northern Yen Bai and central Thanh Hoa provinces will benefit from hospital upgrades thanks to a USD$2.25 million grant from the European Committee (EC), which was finalized on Tuesday.

The provincial funding is part of an EC-backed $22.05 million national program to improve equipment at some of the country’s most cash-strapped hospitals, across 15 provinces.

Healthcare system upgrades in the provinces, assistance with state health spending and an emphasis on preventive healthcare will all be highlights of the national program.

The non-refundable aid is part of the EC’s total aid budget for Vietnam this year. The four-year initiative is slated to wrap up in 2013.

The Yen Bai and Thanh Hoa provincial component will be overseen by Germany’s German Technical Cooperation Organization (GTZ).
