iPhone to officially hit local stores
Compiled by Hong Nguyen

Vietnamese iPhone fans will have a chance to get their hands on the high-profile handsets via official channel after three local mobile carriers announced Wednesday they would distribute the high-tech gadgets in the country later this year.

The three largest mobile operators in Vietnam, Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone, said they had reached an agreement with U.S. high-tech giant Apple to distribute its iPhone units in the country.

Some of the latest iPhone models, such as iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, will be available in the Southeast Asian market in the next few months, Thoi Bao Kinh Te Sai Gon (Saigon Economic Times) newspaper reported.

Local mobile phone users have been buying iPhones via online trading sites or from individual traders who bring back the handsets to Vietnam from foreign countries.

The three telecom firms had yet revealed any detail on the selling prices and after-sale service for iPhones. But the companies said the handsets would be sold with a compulsory service package.

Industry observers forecast iPhone prices in Vietnam would see little difference from those on sale in other countries due to Apple’s same pricing policy for distributors.

Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone are among the first four mobile carriers licensed to deploy the third generation (3G) mobile network in Vietnam, the new technology which can be applied on iPhone handsets.

The high-tech devices are now available in 94 countries and territories worldwide. In Southeast Asia, iPhone handsets are on sale in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Vietnam, the country with a population of 86 million people, currently has more than 110 million mobile phone subscribers.
